We posed some questions to this inspiring woman. Here’s what she had to share:

  1. What inspired you to pursue your career, and how have your experiences as a woman shaped your professional career?

I have a passion for creating engaging shopping experiences, a desire to understand consumer behaviour and an interest in managing diverse teams and operations. My experience as a woman has shaped my professional career through valuable skills like adaptability, empathy, and the ability to encourage collaboration. These qualities are essential for creating inclusive and dynamic retail spaces and fostering strong relationships with tenants, customers, and stakeholders.
  1. What are some of the most significant challenges you’ve faced throughout your career, and how did you overcome them?

Over the course of my career, I’ve encountered several significant challenges. One of these challenges revolves around ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction. To address this, I’ve focused on implementing personalized services and actively engaging with customer feedback to resolve concerns promptly. Moreover, economic fluctuations have posed obstacles, particularly the ongoing energy crisis. To tackle this issue, I’ve prioritized the development of strategies such as solar and generator battery backup solutions. These measures aim to alleviate operational costs and minimize the impact on retailers within the retail centre. In response to these challenges, I’ve adopted a multi-pronged approach. This includes diversifying product offerings, targeting various customer segments, and closely monitoring market trends. By embracing these strategies, I’ve effectively navigated the complexities of economic conditions and mitigated potential risks.
  1. In a world where gender equality is still a work in progress, how do you advocate for equal opportunities and representation for women in your workplace?

Advocating for gender equality is an ongoing effort that requires continuous commitment and dedication. I actively promote equal opportunities and representation by leading by example, treating all employees with fairness and respect and fostering an environment where everyone feels comfortable speaking up about any issues related to gender equality.
  1. What strategies do you employ to maintain a healthy work-life balance and take care of your well-being amidst professional demands?

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance and nurturing well-being amid professional demands involves a strategic approach. I begin by clearly defining my priorities and setting realistic expectations for what I can accomplish within a specific timeframe. This helps me establish boundaries and allocate dedicated time for work, relaxation, personal pursuits, and cherished moments with my family.  Effective time management techniques, such as time-blocking, are pivotal in keeping me focused and preventing burnout. I intentionally schedule breaks and engage in leisure activities to recharge my mental and physical energy. Daily meditation is a calming practice allowing me to reset my intentions for the upcoming day.

I consciously limit my screen time and create designated tech-free zones to foster a healthier relationship with technology. Disconnecting from work-related communication during these periods enables me to fully engage in leisure activities and enjoy quality interactions with friends and family.

Realistic goal setting is another cornerstone of maintaining balance. I strive to avoid over-commitment by aligning my workload with achievable goals that contribute positively to my overall well-being.

Building a robust support network is essential. I surround myself with friends, family, and colleagues who provide guidance, help, and encouragement. Their insights empower me to navigate challenges and sustain equilibrium in my personal and professional life.

Lastly, I regularly assess my work-life balance and make necessary adjustments. This ongoing evaluation ensures my long-term well-being and reinforces harmony between the demands of my career and the richness of my personal experiences.
  1. Mentorship plays a vital role in career growth. Have you had a mentor who influenced your journey, and how has their guidance impacted your professional development?

While I don’t have personal experience with a mentor, I can tell you that several individuals over the past 18 years have imparted great industry insights to me, gaining my professional growth and development in the property industry.
  1. Women have often been underrepresented in leadership positions. How do you navigate the path to leadership and inspire other women to do the same?

Navigating the path to leadership and inspiring other women to follow suit involves several key strategies. I prioritize continuous personal development by engaging in webinars and workshops through organizations like SACSC. I also connect with accomplished women through groups like Lionesses of Africa, benefiting from mentorship and networking opportunities. Within my organization, I advocate for equitable practices, challenging gender biases and promoting diversity. By emphasizing personal growth, seeking guidance from successful women, and championing inclusivity, I aim to pave the way for increased representation of women in leadership roles and encourage others to embrace similar journeys.
  1. Workplaces are evolving, diversity and inclusion are gaining importance. How do you contribute to creating a more inclusive and supportive work environment?

I try to ensure that my own communication is respectful and inclusive. Listening actively and considering different viewpoints encourages open dialogue and creates a space where everyone feels comfortable expressing their thoughts.
  1. Upskilling and continuous learning are essential in a dynamic job market. What steps do you take to stay relevant and enhance your skills in your field?

Stay updated with industry trends by keeping myself informed about the latest developments and trends in the retail industry. Following industry blogs, news publications, and thought leaders to understand emerging technologies, best practices, and changes in this field. Participating in the annual SACSC Conference over the years and the Research Conferences has allowed me to network with professionals and learn from experts. These events often provide valuable insights, workshops, and opportunities to discuss emerging trends in the retail field.
  1. As we celebrate Women’s Month, what advice would you give young women starting their careers or aspiring to make a difference in their respective fields?

Be confident in yourself. Believe in your abilities, and don’t let self-doubt hold you back. Trust that you have what it takes to succeed and make a significant impact. Identify your goals and work towards achieving them with determination and dedication. Embrace the challenges along the way as opportunities to grow and learn. Surround yourself with mentors and role models who can guide, advise, and encourage. Seek out individuals who share your values and can inspire you.

Embrace a growth mindset and invest in expanding your knowledge and skills. Keep up with industry trends and developments, take courses, attend workshops, and seek out opportunities for self-improvement. Prioritize self-care and maintain healthy boundaries while allocating time for activities that bring you joy and fulfilment outside work.

Taking care of yourself is crucial for long-term success, and remember that your journey may have obstacles but with perseverance, resilience, and belief in yourself, you can overcome them and make a significant difference. Trust your instincts and continue to follow your passion. Remember, each person’s journey is unique, so be kind to yourself, celebrate your achievements and keep pushing forward. Chase your dreams with determination and make your mark in the world!
